As an administrative assistant, Balster is often the first friendly face students, families, and visitors encounter each day. Colleagues say her warm smile, welcoming presence, and ability to make everyone feel valued set the tone for the entire building. Staff members frequently describe her as “the glue” that keeps Freedom Elementary running smoothly.
While Balster excels at the many organizational responsibilities of her position, it is her relationships with students and families that truly set her apart. She is known for greeting students by name, offering encouragement during difficult moments, and creating a safe, supportive environment for learners who need extra connection and care. Whether through a listening ear, a comforting conversation, or a snack from her “secret stash,” Balster consistently goes above and beyond to support students emotionally and academically.
Her compassion extends beyond students to families and staff as well. Colleagues say she is always willing to help, whether assisting teachers with projects, supporting families during challenging times, or ensuring students have the resources they need to succeed. She has organized efforts such as the Christmas Giving Tree at Freedom Elementary and has even used her own resources to help provide food and support for students in need.
Balster also plays an important role in building a positive school culture. Each morning, she sends uplifting messages to staff that help create a sense of connection and positivity throughout the building. Her kindness, patience, and ability to make meaningful connections with others have left a lasting impact on students, families, and coworkers alike.
Balster shared her passion for helping students, families, and staff feel seen, valued, and supported. She believes small daily interactions can make a meaningful difference and strives to create a school environment where everyone feels respected and cared for.
