SD Symphony

The holiday spirit arrived early at Horizon Elementary on December 19, thanks to a special visit from the South Dakota Symphony’s wind quintet. The talented ensemble filled the school with music, performing an engaging lineup of seasonal favorites that ranged from classic holiday tunes to elegant classical pieces.

Students and staff gathered eagerly to hear the performance, and the quintet did not disappoint. Their repertoire showcased the versatility and warmth of wind instruments, transitioning seamlessly from lively melodies to soft, peaceful harmonies that evoked the heart of the season.

One of the highlights of the visit was the students’ opportunity to sing along with popular holiday songs. The musicians encouraged participation throughout, creating an atmosphere that was not only festive but deeply inclusive. Voices of children blended with the instruments, producing joyful moments that resonated throughout the room.

Teachers described the event as beautiful and heartwarming—a shared experience that fostered connection for our school community. For many students, this was a unique, up-close introduction to live orchestral music.

Horizon Elementary is trying to provide enriching arts experiences for students, and the visit from the South Dakota Symphony was one way to grow in our exposure to music. The performance served as a reminder of the impact community partnerships can have on education and student engagement.

The holiday season is a time for joy, reflection, and togetherness—and thanks to the South Dakota Symphony wind quintet, Horizon Elementary was able to embrace all three. The memory of children singing alongside professional musicians will undoubtedly linger as one of the most uplifting moments of the school year.
