The South Dakota Association of Elementary School Principals has recognized Rob Sylliaasen, principal of Journey Elementary in the Harrisburg School District, as the 2024 Innovative Leader of the Year.
This award honors a principal who is a “change agent” and has successfully implemented programs that directly impact students, staff, and the school community.
At Journey, Sylliaasen has led a shift toward learner-centered systems, including a 2–5 cohort model that groups students by readiness, not grade. He’s also introduced Boost Up sessions in primary grades, supported purposeful play in the Kindergarten IDEA Lab, and helped create a maker-space, school garden, and updated behavior support system using real-time data.
Known for being present, collaborative, and student-focused, Mr. Sylliaasen continues to lead with innovation and heart. Congratulations! We are #TigerProud! 🐾
